Welcome to Senior English...AKA...English IV
Students, I have selected some outstanding classic novels for you to read and discuss during your last year of high school. I teach these novels because they are highly compatible with Socratic Seminar and all are extremely relatable to contemporary society, and to the situations we encounter in all humanity.
Since you have already been with me for Junior English you pretty much know the ropes.
Here is your reading list for the year:
Animal Farm by George Orwell
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
***There is also a short Mythology unit...about three weeks in duration.

After a mid-year break for some mythology fun, and after you paint a ceiling tile for this classroom or the hallway, we will resume our novel studies and prepare for graduation and what lies beyond. This is an exciting time for you, but you must remain focused on school.
Make sure that post-secondary school requirements are met in a timely fashion. This means making application to a school, being aware of and applying for all scholarships you are eligible for, and planning for summer work and the move to your new school.
If you are going into the workforce be focused on which companies are hiring. The help wanted ads in newspapers are a good place to look; also, there are many hiring agencies that can help you along in securing employment.
The senior cookout is part of your spring activities. It is always held on your graduation practice day, immediately following practice. For your dining pleasure (on paper plates, of course, and plastic forks) you will enjoy smoked, grilled chicken, burgers, brats, homemade beans, potato salad, chips, pop, and a plethora of finely crafted deserts! Enjoy this day; it is specifically for you!
